Nemesis is the first installment in the Badge and the Pen Series featuring Detective Inspector Vinnie Palmer. A vicious psychopathic serial killer, Daniel Moxley, has escaped while being transported to a high-security prison in Northern England. He immediately begins a new reign of terror, committing violent, bloody murders randomly. Moxley somehow thinks he cannot be caught, and DI Vinnie Palmer is convinced he is going to catch him. Moxley goads Palmer by calling him on his cell phone; at different times he threatens that he will kill Vinnie’s friends and colleagues. Unfortunately, he does, and also plans to kill Vinnie. With a bit of police work, Vinnie gets close, but the danger to him and those he cares about becomes almost too much. Vinnie is also in danger of losing his job which seems to be typical in thriller novels.

While Nemesis is quite well-written, the characters aren’t particularly likeable, even the good guys. Readers may find that the characters don’t seem quite like real people, and this does take away from the story. However, for those who love suspense, and don’t mind graphic violence and murder along with sexual innuendo and language, this may be a perfect novel. This is a novel where the perpetrator is known, and the suspense builds as Vinnie, et all find themselves in more and more dangerous situations along with additional violent murders. Even the good guys in this novel are not exempt from Moxley’s reign of terror, and the big question is whether or not Vinnie will even survive. Vinnie pairs up with Moxley’s psychiatrist, and much of the information gleaned from him rings true, so that adds a bit of interesting information to the novel.

Nemesis is not recommended for young adults, or those who prefer their thriller without violence and blood.
